The Place
Los Angeles, a town 510 km south of Santiago, is easily reached from there by train and bus (six hours) or by bus (7 1/2 hrs.). A museum of Indian jewelry, a colorful market and a modern plaza are maybe not many highlights, but the real attractions of this rural center can be found in the near Andes or at the coast. There are two sparcely developed National Parks: the Laguna del Laja NP with two volcanoes and the Nahuelbuta NP with araucaria forests. The upper Bío Bío valley or the coast around Concepción are also worth a trip.
The School
An international guesthouse
20 kms. north of town, run by a German couple, is the
place where you can learn Spanish in a relaxed atmosphere,
one-on-one or in a small group. A large park at the banks
of a river has plenty of spots to concentrate or relax,
hammocks included. The teachers are multilingual and emphasize
an easy access to Spanish conversation. After a week you
can already make yourself understood in presence, past
and future on a simple, but accurate level.
The Spanish Lessons
The classes start where your previous knowledge of Spanish ends and work with the Berlitz teaching material, almost completely in Spanish right from the start.
Normally, classes are on monday to friday, with two units (45 mins. each) in the morning and two units in the afternoon, so there is enough time left to repeat and relax. The learning speed is determined by the students. Grammar basics are taught by means of useful practical vocabulary. After a few units you will already experience the first success.

| The guesthouse offers a variety of activities:
table tennis, bicycle tours, canoa tours, swimming, reading,
video watching (large book, film and music collection),
horseback riding on the ranch next door. In two hours
you can reach by car, by bus or by organized trip the
upper Bio Bio valley with Callaqui volcano or the Pacific
coast. Only half an hour away are the famous Laja waterfalls.
Absolute highlights are the National Parks Laguna del
Laja (trekking maps available). |
