Chilean SIM card - Register your smartphone!
Since September 23rd, 2017 foreign travelers who want to use their mobile phone or another mobile device with a Chilean SIM card have to register their device to be able to operate it.
To do so, you have to
1. Choose a Certification Company. You can find them here.
2. Register the device online. You will be asked for the following information: brand and model, place and date of the purchase (keep the sales receipt at hand), IMEI number.
Some of the network operator´s sales offices undertake the registration when you purchase a SIM card as mentioned above. You can register one (1) mobile phone per year for free.
The certification process can take up to 5 days. Once it has been completed, you can use your device with any SIM card of any national mobile provider. Make sure that your device is compatible with the technologies and frequencies available (2G, 3G, 4G).
There is no guarantee that your mobile device will receive the alarms that the Chilean emergency warning system sends out.
Please note: If you want to use your mobile phone only in roaming mode, it is not necessary to do this registration.
The new regulation described above has been suspended due to the Pope's visit to Chile, until February 28, 2018.
