Johanna about her internship:
Having had previous experience in production work, lightning design and backstage managing, I could easily integrate with the work in the theatre, preparing various presentation and happenings during the night. Like this I participated in the production of a theatre festival during my first week, later I worked at the flamenco cycles as well as a modern dance competition during 3 nights. Finally, I helped in the production of a Folkloric weekend with regional music, dance and food from all parts of Chile.
During the theatre festival, which mostly presented Chilean theatre plays, my contribution included mostly stage building and lightning design, as well as selling tickets and welcoming the guests.
The flamenco Cycle consists of four dance nights from august till November, every first Friday of the month, where different companies come to show their abilities.
For the fourth meeting of modern dance I worked in communication and publicity, like creating posters, handing out leaflets and flyers. I also welcomed the artists and assisted them in their preparation process.
Finally, during a Blues night I was given more responsibility and could do all the lightning during the show on my own, which was a good experience, but not very difficult, thanks (or due) to the only simple lights available.
The work in the office demands much flexibility, good ideas how to improve the work of the KLR but also includes simple work like cutting and pasting posters, sending out Email with information and other press work. The employees are open for conversation for all kinds of projects.
To fill out my free time in the mornings, I decided to propose a project I could work on independently. Considering the constant lack of money to renew and improve the technical equipment (consoles for lightning and sound, computers, climatization), I thought it might be useful to send out a demand for funding from the regional education ministry which offers competitions for cultural centres and other organisations. The competition consists of assembling all information about the cultural centre, a detailed description of the equipment needed, its use (financial tables, architectural plans) and a project I had to invent (like for example a theatre festival, or a meeting of several youth orchestras, etc.) which would be ruled out with the new equipment under supervision of the jury of the ministry.
In general the atmosphere was rather relaxed and my working relationship with the employees turned into real friendship.
